ABOUT US

A CONTINUED HISTORY

The Burke Gazette is a long-time staple on Main Street and after 84 years of Fahrenbacher family ownership, and about 41 years of Joe Fahrenbacher being the owner it took over new ownership in 2020 by Chloe (Kenzy) Kocer.

The Burke Gazette has seen many years on its name, and will continue to do so for years to come. The first issues of the Gazette were published on October 24th, 1904.

The Gazette was advertised in the Burke High School Newspaper, The Rattler in 1913, as  “$1.50 Per Year and Worth It, Issued Once a Week, A.M. Church, Publisher,” and although the price has changed we still agree it’s worth it.

After partnering up with his dad, P.J Fahrenbacher in 1976 Joe Fahrenbacher then took the business over in 1978. His dad had also previously taken the business over from his dad F.J Fahrenbacher. Although Joe has been the owner since 1978 he has been helping out at the Gazette since he was seven years old. Joe has seen it all, from setting type, navigating the beginning of the internet, and going from film and dark rooms to digital photos and computer software he has been a true innovator in how the paper has run all these years. After working in the news business for so long, Joe has become quite the historian, and the stories he can tell are quite remarkable.

Owner Chloe (Kenzy) Kocer is a 2014 BHS alumna and graduated from the University of Missouri with a bachelor’s degree in journalism. She interned at South Dakota Magazine for a summer and worked at the University’s newspaper and magazine while in college. Chloe works heavily on the advertising, printing projects and business side of things. “I’m very excited to be back in my hometown doing what I love, and I am very happy to continue this great newspaper with all of you.”
